Course Objective

The main aims of the course are to teach the biomolecules playing roles in living organisms and their functions. The metabolic pathways and their regulations are also included by the course

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   learn the feature of biochemical molecules
2   Learn nucleic acids, molecular characteristics and the synthesis of these molecules
3   Understand the basic features of amino acids, synthesis and degradation of these molecules , and the structural features of proteins and enzymes and theirs functions
4   Learn types and structures of carbohydrates
5   Understand molecular and functional properties of lipids
6   Learn bioenergetics and basic terms related to bioenergetics
7   Learn the metabolic pathways of carbohydrates, lipids and amino acids, in which energy and intermediate substances are produced and the regulation of these pathways

Course Contents

1 Amino acids; the structure and classification. Biosynthesis of amino acids. Peptides and proteins; structural levels and denaturation.
2 Enzymes, enzyme kinetics and coenzymes. Nucleotides & nucleic acids. Replication
3 Transcription & RNA processing. Translation, posttranslational modifications, folding and protein targeting
4 Regulation of gene expression Biosynthesis and degradation of nucleotides.
5 Bioenergetics and the laws of thermodynamics. Phosphoryl group transfers and ATP Biological redox reactions
6 Mono- , di- and polysaccharides. Glycolysis and feeder pathways for glycolysis. Pentose phosphate pathway
7 Gluconeogenesis Coordinated regulation of glycolysis and gluconeogenesis. Glycogen metabolism. Coordinated regulation of glycogen synthesis and breakdown.
8 Classification of lipids. The structure of triacylglycerols and phospholipids Biosynthesis of triacylglycerols and phospholipids
9 Biosynthesis of cholesterol, steroids and isoprenoids. Biosynthesis of fatty acids and eicosanoids
10 Oxidation of fatty acids and ketogenesis. Formation of acetylCoA The TCA cycle Regulation of the cycle.
11 Membrane structure and membrane dynamics. Transport across membranes The amino group metabolism of amino acids. Urea cycle
12 The pathways for amino acid degradation Electron transport chain Oxidative phosphorylation and ATP synthesis.
13 The integration and regulation of fuel metabolism. Proteoglycans, glycoproteins, glycolipids and glycosaminoglycans and their biological functions

Main method is teacher s presentation. Some presentations may be prepared and presented by students upon request of teachers. Students are expected to read the topic before coming to lecture. A theorical report on a special topic must be prepared by students.
