Course Objective

To gain knowledge about existent energy sources of ships; to gain knowledge to make experimental studies about energy sources that have potential to be used in the short run; to make R&D projects for the new international obligations: EEDI, EEOI and SEEMP; to be familiar with the ship energy efficiency factors.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to prepare Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) for ships,
2   To be able to make experimental projects for the future energy sources,
3   To be able to calculate resistances that effect to ships
4   To be able to calculate EEDI and EEOI for ships,
5   To be able to reveal the applicability of alternative energy sources to ships.

1 Overview of the course, presentation of the general framework of the topics, to define the basic terminology for the course.
2 Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP)
3 Energy Efficiency Design Index(EEDI)
4 Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI)
5 International Energy Efficiency Certificate (IEEC) studies
6 Energy loss of ship by wind resistance
7 Energy loss of ship by wave resistance
8 Energy loss of ship by hull and propeller dirtiness
9 Speed losses and increased power requirements for different weather and sea conditions
10 LNG/LPG transformation for marine diesel engines
11 Applicability of shale gas, biodiesel, hydrogen, dual fuel systems to ships
12 Applicability of renewable energy sources to ships
13 Project Presentations
14 Project Evaluation
