Course Objective

The objective of this course is to the following topics:
1. understanding of the fundamental principles underlying basic electronics,
2. design and construct simple electronic circuits.
3. Analyse electronic circuits both independently and collaboratively.
4. Identify and solve problems involving electronics
5. Communicate their understanding of electronics both verbally and in written form.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To apply knowledge of basic science and engineering fundamentals
2   To undertake problem identification, formulation and solution involving electronics
3   To design and construct simple electronic circuits.
4   To analyse electronic circuits both independently and team worker
5   Understanding of the social, cultural, global and environmental responsibilities of the engineer

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Introduction to Electronics, DC /AC Circuits
2 Analog DC Electronics: charge, current, voltage, Ohm s law, Kirchoff s laws
3 Series and parallel circuits,
4 Simplifying resistor networks, power and power transfer;
5 Alternating current & voltage, frequency, period, phase, amplitude (p-p, peak, RMS),
6 Capacitor circuit and reactance, inductor circuit and reactance,
7 RC and RL series circuits, phasor notation; impedance,
8 MIDTERM I.
9 RLC series resonance circuit; low and high pass filters, ideal transformers;
10 Ideal op-amp, model, open/closed loop gain; inverting/non-inverting configurations;
11 Demonsrative experiments
12 Digital Electronics: intr. digital logic, number systems, Boolean operators, truth-tables
13 Design and simplification of circuits, Combinatorial logic
14 Electrical safety. The biological effects of electrical current.
15 Final Exam
