Course Objective

Urban design is a multi-disciplinary process to shape the physical setting in an urban context to meet the needs, desires of people with certain lifestyles. Knowledge from
various disciplines needs to be blend together to make urban areas functional and attractive. This course aims to discuss the connections between people and places and
parameters related to place-making to transform spaces to places with distinct beauty and identity.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Understand the importance of exploring the relationship between human behaviour qand physical setting
2   Understand the parameters related to environmental image, environmental aesthetics, urban identity
3   Being able to compare basic design concepts and urban design concepts
4   Being able to criticize empirical research on human behaviour and physical setting

2 Place versus space
3 The image of environment versus the evaluative image of environment
4 Measurable concepts of environmental aesthetic
5 Parameters related to place attachment, identity, and perception of security
6 Environmental affordances and environmental behavior
7 Urban design concepts relation to concepts of basic design
8 Handing in homework assignments
9 Discussion of readings and design a simple research on one of the discussed issues
