COASTAL ENGINEERING

Course Objective

The main purpose of the lecture is to introduce marine structures. This course provides a basic knowledge about marine structures with respect to planning and design purposes. Topics covered a basic overview of coastal engineering; and, the types, functions, reliability and failure modes of marine structures.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To understand relevant influencing factors for the design of marine structures
2   To learn basic overview of oceanography and dominant coastal processes (waves, tides, currents, winds, storms, etc.)
3   To understand wave theories; random sea waves; wave modifications in coastal zones; wave forecasting methods
4   To learn wave forces on marine structures (vertical sea-walls, piles and pipes).
5   To understand shore protection structures and protection techniques (sea walls, revetment, groins, jetties.)
6   To study marina structures and equipments
7   To learn marine outfall systems
