Course Objective

Fisheries is a production method that provides input to the local economy as a result of a particular investment and effort. Fisheries provide not only continuous income to the economy but also high quality animal protein for human nutrition. In order to increase the animal protein sources, the nations, especially aware of the importance of having a balanced feeding habits, are looking for the various ways to benefit in higher rates from their national waters and also offshore waters. Those nations invest in to fisheries from this day for a better utilization in the future. In this context, "Far Sea Fisheries" concept is need to be taken in the consideration in the scope of development programs at national level. The concept should be approached with a modern understanding for making a good start on a solid foundation and provide continuity.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Examination of fishery resources in the Turkish and World Seas. Expose the possible fishing areas for Far Sea Fisheries
2   Information on habitat characteristics of fishery resources in the world. Forming basic tools and necessary instruments to analysis the possibility of benefit from the sources.
3   to develop the ability for feasibility analysis to utilise the far sea fishery resources for the benefit of Türkiye
4   improve the capacity to make economic feasibility for the use of these resources
5   The ability to use a wide range of data and how to collect this data
6   Co-operation and information share in Far Sea Fishery with all related sectors and develop it as a habit
7   for being have an international vision and frame of mind in order to provide approaches and strategies for co-operation by taking into account the socio-economic data obtained from the countries with unexploited fisheries resources
8   in order to progress the country economy, achieving the vision by the determination of the correct strategy for operating the sources in the far seas

1 An Overview of the oceans the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, the Indian Ocean and the Antarctica
2 Upwelling regions in the world (Peru and Argentina, West Africa, the Western Indian Ocean) The importance of the upwelling areas and the richness of the present fisheries resources
3 Fishery resources (large pelagics, small pelagics and demersal fish) Analysis and assessment of fishery resources
4 World Fisheries Production and Türkiye Fishing capacity of Türkiye in the world and evaluation of the fishing power.
5 Central Eastern Atlantic (Central Eastern Atlantic coasts, Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal, Nigeria, Portugal, Spain) Analysis of fishery in the Central Eastern Atlantic region
6 Western Indian Ocean Rim (Somalia, Yemen and Aden Gulf) Analysis of fishery in the Western Indian Ocean coasts
7 Northwest Indian Ocean (Omman, Pakistan, Arab Sea and the Red Sea) Analysis of fishery in the Northwest Indian Ocean
8 Mid-term Examination Written examination
9 Start (mandatory) Conditions of Far Sea Fishing (determination of the target country, providing research conditions and feasibility studies) Analysis of the conditions of a target country's in order to be capable for far sea fishery
10 Data Collection and Assessment Programmes (stock studies, economic profitability studies) Data collection and evaluation programs are used in the feasibility of far sea fishery
11 A case study (establishing a national team, building an ocean type research vessel, the design of the commercial fishing boat by the region characteristics, analysis of socio-economic structure of the target country's, co-operation of local experts and suppliers) Mandatory studies are in a pilot application on far sea fishery
12 Legal Status and Bilateral Agreements (the activation of the social and cultural relations with the target country, establishing agreements by international law of the sea, co-operation with target country by signing these aggrements) the legal, social and cultural collaborations with the target countries and the analysis of bilateral agreements

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Class lectures are carried out in a highly interactive format. Lectures will focus on the real world applications. In addition, problems and their solutions will be provided for better comprehension. The lecturer orients the students to think and ask questions.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

There are many homeworks during the courses. These assignments are usually regarding the applications of other countries. The thoughts and
solutions of the students on these issues will be questioned. By this way, the student's knowledge will be increased and their perspectives on events in the frame of mind will be developed.
