Course Objective

To give grounding in core concepts (theoretical and applied) of marine geologist and geophysist for work in a wide variety of past to recent marine environments (coastal zone to the deep oceans). To provide the marine geologist and geophysist with the skills to achieve the acquisition, processing and interpretation of a range of seismic data sets. To teach the marine geologist and geophyscist, a range of key skills including evaluate different schemes of stratigraphic analysis, problem solving, presentation, communication appropriate to this sub-discipline.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   be able to use marine facies analysis to evaluate and interpret a volume of seismic data to recognize diverse stratigraphic play opportunities
2   understand the geological significance of reflection configurations and what environments they represent
3   understand depositional models and how to test and map them in seismic data
4   learn how to prepare environmental and lithofacies maps from seismic facies maps and understand geological processes operating in a variety of environments
5   students will learn the underlying assumptions, benefits and deficits of the method of analysis chosen
6   different depositional systems are used to illustrate: shallow to deepwater siliciclastics and carbonates-from supratidal to bathyal

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

1. Exams
Two tests will be carried out during the period.
Midterm (20%); Final exam (60%); Presentation (%20).
Examination, obtaining information about the methods used in Marine Facies Analysis and will measure the ability to apply the method. Each exam will include the class material, and will include the assigned applications.
2. Project, Presentation and Participation
Students working on the problem and understand them, it is essential for students to complete the course. Prepare presentations on any subject related to the content of the course and project, the students with the realization of debate and discussion in the classroom of students prepared presentations, class participation and interpretation capabilities will be developed.

Assessment Criteria

1. The exam will take place in one of the main topics of each chapter. You will be asked one or more questions for each topic. The rating evaluation of exam questions will be carried out according to the point system determined by instructor.
2. Students to be derived from participation in points (i) attendance is condition, (ii) the student's quality of response to questions asked by the instructor during class, and (iii) will depend on the contribution to the students to create a positive learning environment.
3. The degree that a good turnout for the border between the two grades will carry your stage to the next level.
4. Subject to be clearly understood, the accuracy of the data evaluation will be evaluated on presentation prepared about the course content.
