Course Objective

Proper design of earthquake-resistant structures requires estimation of the level of ground motion to which the structures will be subjected. One of the goals of earth scientists should be estimation of these parameters and provide them for engineering applications. This course includes the description of the ground motion parameters and estimation of them in the sense of Engineering Seismology.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to define the basic parameters of the earthquake that will expose to structures
2   To be able to define basic concepts of engineering seismology
3   To be able to define theoretical and statistical earthquake hazard analysis
4   To be able to implement statistical earthquake hazard analysis
5   To be able to define natural frequency and amplification of the sites
6   To be able to discuss seismic hazard, building codes and earthquake related developments/politics in Türkiye

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Introduction to earthquakes: what earthquakes are, how we describe earthquakes, where earthquakes occur, how we record earthquakes, why earthquakes occur, historical earthquakes, seismicity and seismotectonics
2 Types of seismometers and seismic records (Displacement, velocity and acceleration)
3 Kinematic and dynamic parameters of the earthquakes
4 Relationship between frequency and magnitude: a recurrence period; the distribution of earthquakes sizes in a given period of time, occurrence probability of earthquakes
5 Classification of the earthquakes based on the source mechanism (Source effect). Active and potential source zones and types
6 Attenuation parameters: regional and local attenuation parameters (Propagation effect) and attenuation relationships
7 Ground Motion Parameters: amplitude, frequency content, and duration of strong ground motions
8 Natural frequency and amplification of the sites (Site effect). Influence of site effect on damage
9 Spectral Ratio and Nakamura Methods to obtain natural frequency and amplification of the sites
10 Mid-term exam
11 Earthquake spectra (PGA-peak ground acceleration and SA-spectral acceleration)
12 Deterministic and probabilistic hazard analysis
13 Seismic hazard in Türkiye and classification of the sites: micro-zoning studies. The building codes of Türkiye. Discussion on earthquake related developments and politics in Türkiye

The course is taught in a lecture, class presentation and discussion format. All class members are expected to attend and take part in lecture/presentation and discussion sessions. Homeworks prepared by students are presented to open a discussion session.
