Course Objective

Alkali-activated binders present some important technical, environmental and economical benefits over ordinary Portland cement. Within the scope of this course, materials used in the production of alkali-activated cements, applications of alkali-activated cements, advantage and disadvantages of alkali-activated cements in comparison with Portland cements, design rules, production methods and durability of alkali-activated cements are explained in detail.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   to define the properties of alkali-activated cements and the other alternative binders.
2   to realize the engineering properties of alkali-activated cements.
3   to realize the applications of the alkali-activated cements.
4   to compare the properties of alkali-activated cements with Portland cements.
5   to compare the durability of alkali-activated binders with Portland cements.
