Course Objective

Historical structures are a part of our cultural heritage. In order to protect the historical structures, their structural behavior has to be known and best strengthening technique should be selected. The aim of this course is to teach the structural analyses of historical structures. Information needed for structural analyses, different analyses techniques, dead load, seismic load, and other loads will be considered in teaching structural analyses. Strengthening techniques will discussed.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to develop his/her information at the level of specialist in the civil engineering related topics based on the undergraduate qualification levels.
2   To be able to collect, interpret, apply, and evaluate the data.
3   To be able to expose the unpredictable and complex problems faced in practical applications.
4   To be able to use the information, problem solving and / or practical skills in interdisciplinary studies.
5   To be able to solve the problems by using appropriate research methods.

1 Introduction, course policies, the importance of historical structures, sources, term project, structural elements of historical masonry structures
2 Insitu tests: Nondestructive tests: Surface temperature and moisture, ultrasonic pulse velocity, hardness, thermography, radar, Semi destructive methods: flat jack , shear, endoscopy, sampling, Laboratory tests: mechanical and physical tests
3 Structural health monitoring of historical structures: crack opening, settlement, seismic monitoring, moisture, temperature
4 Structural analyses of historical Urla Kamanlı Mosque: a TUBITAK project presentation, Turkish Seismic Code: Masonry Structures
5 Modelling techniques 1: Graphical method, simple wall model, cross bar model (Strut tie model),
6 Modelling techniques 2: Equivalent frame model, Generalized Matrix Formulation
7 Finite element modeling of historical masonry: micro approach
8 Finite element modeling of historical masonry: macro approach: homogenization
9 Finite element modeling of historical masonry: macro approach: homogenization
10 Finite element structural analyses for dead load, acceleration response spectrum, evaluation of results
11 Finite element structural analyses for time history analyses, settlement analyses, evaluation of results
12 Strengthening techniques of historical structures 1: Foundations, walls, columns, footages, connections, slabs
