Course Objective

The finite element method has become a powerful tool for the numerical solution of a wide range from deformations and stress analysis of aircraft, building, and bridge structures, to field analysis of fluid flow, seepage, and other flow problems. With the advances in computer technology, complex problems can be modeled with relative ease. The finite element method is a numerical procedure for solving the ordinary and partial differential equations that arise in engineering and mathematical physics.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To provide the student with the necesssary background to use the computer as a tool for engineering analysis and design
2   To develop comprehensive knowledge in the fundamental mathematical and physical basis of finite element method
3   To know how to do build finite lement method models of physical problems and apply appropriate constraints and boundary conditions along with external loads followed by an analysis
4   To develop and exercise critical thinking in interpreting results from finite element method analysis
5   To gain hands-on experience with practical aspects of finite element modeling, to learn and apply finite element solutions to problems in civil engineering
