Course Objective

The aim of this course is to provide a basis for the understanding of the engineering properties and behavior of soils and the factors controlling changes with time and to indicate how this knowledge is used in the solution of geotechnical problems. Presenting basic concepts of soil mineralogy, composition, engineering properties, fabric, electrolyte system, total and effective stresses, deposits and their geotechnical properties, conductivity, volume change, deformation and strength, time effects.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Soil Profile: Rocks and their weathering, formation of soil profiles. HW-1 will be assigned.
2 Individual Soil Particle: Atoms, crystals, soil particles and their mineralogy, methods of compositional analysis
3 Assemblage of Particles: Phase relationships, particle size distribution, relative density, consistency, classification. HW-1 will be submitted.
4 Arrangement of Particles: In clay suspensions and in soils, fabric and its characterization. HW-2 will be assigned.
5 Soil-Water Interaction: Mechanisms, adsorbed water, double layer, attractive and repulsive forces, cation exchange.
6 Stresses in a Soil Mass: Total stress, effective stress, pore water pressure and its measurement, unsaturated soils. HW-2 will be submitted, and HW-3 will be assigned.
7 Soil Deposits: Residual soils, sedimentary soils, fabric-structure-property, liquefaction, sensitivity, dispersion, slaking, collapse, swell.
8 Flow Through Soils: Flow laws, water flow, heat flow, electrical flow, chemical flow, coupled flows, electroosmosis. HW-3 will be submitted.
9 1st Midterm examination.
10 Volume Change Behavior: Preconsolidation, shrinkage, collapse, compression, swell, consolidation, secondary compression, effect of temperature. HW-4 will be assigned.
11 Strength and Deformation Behavior: Fabric-structure-strength, friction, strength parameters for sands and clays, residual strength, cyclic loading and liquefaction, mixed soils, elastic and plastic deformation
12 Strength-Deformation-Time Behavior: Creep, relaxation, aging. HW-4 will be submitted, and HW-5 will be assigned.
13 Presentations
14 2nd Midterm Examination HW-5 will be submitted.

Course topics will be presented in class. Students will prepare and present reports on article reading, and on engineering analyses done individually.
