Course Objective

Circular economy fundamentally lies on the idea of transforming products, production systems and supply chains in order to establish workable
relationships between ecological systems and economic growth, pushing also the frontiers of environmental sustainability.
The focus is on the creation of self-sustaining production systems in which materials are used over and over again. Incorporating these circular economy principles into the supply chain planning and management strategies, is important for minimizing material flows and for reducing unintended negative consequences of production processes. To promote circular economy, proper methodologies need to be developed to select the most favourable system and supply chain configuration and logistics options and to identify cost-efficient system designs with minimal carbon footprint. The primary aim of this course is to teach different analytical tools, industrial engineering and operations research methods to promote circular economy, to design and manage circular systems. To this aim, the main methods and tools to create circular systems and to convert traditional linear systems into circular systems will be introduced as well as the main waste management and resource use strategies.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To make the students aware of the importance of circular economy, comprehend the differences between linear and circular systems and advantages of circular systems over linear systems
2   To develop the students' analytical capabilities to comprehend the main elements, operations and activities in a circular system and circular supply chain
3   To develop the students' analytical capabilities in solving the design and management problems to create circular systems based on waste management and resource use concepts
4   To make the students develop and employ integrated methodologies for design and management of circular systems and supply chains

1 Introduction to circular economy, circular systems and supply chains, benefits, approaches, and challenges in circular businesses
2 Circular thinking and the main strategies in design and management of circular production systems and supply chains
3 Waste management, resource conflict and design for resource value
4 Closed loop supply chains, industrial ecology and reverse logistics
5 Systems and life cycle thinking for circular product and business model (re)design: Identifying waste flows and redirecting them for value creation and capture
6 Basics of decision making in design and management of circular systems and supply chains
7 Industrial engineering and operations research methods for optimization, design and management of circular systems and supply chains to promote circular economy
8 Modelling and optimization methods for design and management of circular systems and supply chains to promote circular economy
9 Modelling and optimization methods for design and management of circular systems and supply chains to promote circular economy
