Course Objective

The course aims to raise awareness of sustainable building materials and construction technologies by informing about basic concepts, approaches and evaluation methods for the sustainability of construction.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Recognizing the importance of sustainability in construction.
2   Understanding the concepts and approaches of sustainable construction.
3   Utilizing the calculation methods to evaluate the sustainability in construction.
4   Evaluating the sustainability of building materials.
5   Evaluating the sustainability of construction technologies.

3 Sustainability of building materials: eco-labels, Environmental Product Declarations (EPD)
4 Life cycle concept; life cycle for building materials, building components and elements.
5 Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) 5.1. Goal and scope definition 5.2. Inventory analysis 5.3. Impact Assessment 5.4. Interpretation
6 Partial LCA; Gate-to-gate, carbon footprint
7 Mid-term Exam
8 Approaches for sustainable construction 8.1. Direct gain approaches 8.2. Indirect gain approaches
9 Direct gain approaches; approaches for reducing carbon emissions during construction process
10 Indirect gain approaches; construction-based approaches for reducing carbon emissions during building life
11 Sustainability of reinforced concrete and R.C. structures. (Homework presentation and discussion)
