Course Objective

The purpose ot this cource to know the geological and economical parameters effecting production, processing and the use of natural stones as construction building stones in engineering projects.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Able to classify the natural building stones used in engineering projects according to their geological origin.
2   Able to know the economical parameters effecting use of rock mass as natural building stone
3   Able to know techniques of production and processing of natural building stone.
4   Able to know the geological parameters effecting mass properties of stones.
5   Able to know the geological parameters effecting use of natural building Stone of magmatic, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks and their determination and evaluation techniques.
6   Able to know the techniques used for determination of the material properties of natural building stones.
7   Able to know the techniques used for determination of the durability of stones and the factors effecting their durability

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Identification and classification of natural building stones due to their geological origin, usage type and location. Material properties of natural stones and identification techniques of them and related standards.
2 Economical parameters affecting their usability of stones as natural building stone. Midterm Exam
3 Techniques of natural building stone production. Durability and deterioration of natural building stones and the factors causing deterioration of them.
4 Technology of natural building stone processing. General view of Turkish natural stones.
5 Geological parameters of rocks effecting their mass properties and their effects on the usability of rocks as building stone
6 Geological parameters effecting use as a construction materials of magmatic rocks.
7 Midterm Exam
8 Geological parameters effecting use as a construction materials of metamorphic rocks.
9 Geological parameters effecting use as a construction materials of sedimentary rocks.
10 Identification and evaluation techniques used for determine the geological parameters effecting usability of stones as natural stone
