Course Objective

Identification and called of a gemstone (rough, polished, or mounted) on the base of the scientific criteria.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Able to have knowledge of gemmological investigation methods and equipments.
2   Able to make laboratory tests on gemmological investigation subjects.
3   Able to use gemmological investigation methods and equipments.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Definition of the terms gemmological and mineralogical . Mineralogical examination techniques and their uses in gemmological grading.
2 Definition of the terms gemmological and mineralogical . Mineralogical examination techniques and their uses in gemmological grading.
3 Basics of examination of transparent, translucent and opaque types of gemstones. Definition of light. Reflection and refraction.
4 Optic characters in transparent and translucent gems and optic signs (indicatrixes). Refraction index.
5 Standard refractometer equipment (running principles, direct reading techniques (spot technique, white light reading, day light reading), maintenance and cleaning). Determining of refraction index, double refraction, optic character, dispersion and possible crystal system of transparent and translucent gems with the use of refractometer.
6 Immersion technique (determining the approximate refraction index of transparent and translucent cut gems, displaying immersions). Determining refractive index with microscope. Measuring the refractive index of gems with high refractive index (diamond and imitations). Dispersion, Measuring dispersion with spectrometer table.
7 Mid term exam
8 Photoluminescence (defining fluorescence and phosphorescence and using in gemmological examination). Gemmological examination with the help of ultraviolet rays and x-rays (the colors they show and transparency). Color filters and fluorescence. Chelsea filter, its characteristics and uses. Cross filter technique and filters.
9 Spectroscope equipment (characteristics and uses). Methods of reflection besides transmission. Optic absorption spectrums (graphs, picks and band readings) uses in gemmological examination and reading. Activator atoms causing or preventing absorption.
10 Determining specific weight (hydrostatic Wesphal scale - heavy liquids immersion techniques).
11 Dichroscope device (specifications and uses). Using dichroism and pleochroism in gemmological examination.
12 Loupe and magnifying glasses (properties and uses in gemmological examination). Microscopes (types, parts, uses). Types of lights used in gemmological microscopes. Examining inclusions, special inner structures and cuts under different types of light with gemmological microscope. Immersionoscope device (specs, uses, immersion cell and fluids).
13 Gemmological examination techniques with immersionoscope.Portable gemmological laboratory and its using.
14 Presentation of research homework.

It will be evaluated theoretical mid exam, presentation of assignment and research homework and final exam as well as 5 course-learning outcomes.
