Course Objective |
In this course both theory and practical solutions are treated. Basic understanding of databases and relational data management is necessary when evaluating different alternatives. Theory includes the basics of data bases and relational DBMSs, special features of spatial data as well as specialities of GIS applications and processing which affects the data requirements. A special emphasis is on database design process using conceptual modeling. Object-oriented approach, standards for spatial data and platforms for distributed geo-processing are introduced. Some commercial solutions are presented as examples and the students perform an exercise work on database design and implementation. |
