Course Objective

This course aims to provide the knowledge about the sections of ancient ships, ship building techniques, development process of these techniques and evaluation of the materials used in the construction of ships within the context of the archaeological data.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Recognize the construction techniques and materials, sizes, forms and rigging systems of ancient ships
2   Classify the general and regional characteristics of the ships
3   Be able to evaluate the techniques used in the construction of ships and the development process of these techniques from antiquity to the present
4   Be able to integrate the shipbuilding technology to the underwater archeology
5   Provide social and economic information from the past to the present based on the materials used by ancient civilizations
6   Be able to create databank for the processing of information, drawing, etc. using the recent computer programs
7   Be qualified enough to perform research on ancient ships on international level
8   Be able to gain a different perspective in underwater archeology using multi-disciplines such as ship engineering, seafaring, etc.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The course is carried out in lecture, presentation and class discussion format. All class members are expected to attend lecture, presentation and discussion sessions. In addition, presentations are prepared by a group that is assigned for a week and open a discussion session.
