Course Objective

Hydraulic, hydrologic and water resources engineers have long been concerned about
failure phenomena. One of the major concerns is the definition of a failure event E, of
its probability of occurrence P(E), and the complementary notion of reliability. The
purpose of this course is to present a tutorial overview of existing work in the broad
area of reliability to aid in the process of decision making for water resources
management. A common mathematical framework is described for the various aspects of
reliability and risk in water resources.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   to access and acquire hydro-meteorlogical data, evaluation of data and
2   to give strategic decisions on planning and operation of water infrastructures
3   to assess and analyze possible risks of water infrastructure
4   to determine the reliability of the design of water structures
5   to give decisions on an informed base
