Course Objective

The course aims to build up environmental consciousness at the graduate students of architecture. The research oriented course introduces and discusses the multiple aspects of the physical and cultural environment, with their active roles on shaping of the architectural product, as well as the effects of the buildings on the buildings on the environment. The students are encouraged to take part in the discussions, following individual research on the topics and on the selected case studies.

2   Analysing the cultural environment and its formation.
3   Evaluating and conserving the historical buildings and surroundings.
4   Learning about environment-friendly architecture and planning.
5   Evaluation of sustainable architecture.

Course Contents

1 Introducing the environment with its multiple aspects.
2 Components of the physical environment, their roles in physical planning and design.
3 Methods of analysing the physical environment.
4 Methods of evaluating the physical environment.
5 Individual research on the analysis and evaluation of the physical environment.
6 Influence of the environment on the design process.
7 Environmentally conscious architecture.
8 Mid-term exam (reports) - discussion
9 Environments of historic and cultural value.
10 Efforts of protecting culturally and naturally valuable sites.
11 Examples from Türkiye, on protecting the natural and cultural environment.
12 Fabric of the urban environments, designing within the city.
13 Presentation of the individual researchs.
14 Presentation of the individual reseachs.

Recomended or Required Reading

No specific textbook. Referred sources include multiple publications (books and periodicals) concerning with the interaction of architectural practice with the physical and cultural environment.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

To inform students about the subjects. Discussions about students researches and presentations. Analysing the process with the final reports.

Homework and Research (50%) - (LO1, LO2, LO3). Regular attendance to lectures and active contribution to the studies, preparation and presentation of the required studies in a timely and qualified manner, scientific level.

Presentation and Report (50%) - (LO4, LO5). Submission of a research paper based on the course readings and discussions, but also presenting new material, as a final assignment.
