Course Objective

Having knowledge about the definition of zootherapy, medicinal animals in a historical perspective from past to present, traditional therapeutic practices in various countries and animal groups used in zootherapeutic practices.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To learn define of zootherapy, medicinal animals in a historical perspective from past to present
2   Understanding animal groups used in zootherapeutic practices
3   To associate herpetofauna, Entemoterapi, Apitherapy, Ichthyotherapy and Hirudotherapy used in traditional folk medicine to each other
4   To adapt zootherapeutic practices learned on different animal groups
5   Questioning of the link between marine invertebrates and vertebrates used in traditional folk medicine
6   To design a monitoring study based on the information learned
7   To search the database about sampling and monitoring zootherapeutic practices, and transferring the obtained information oral or written.

8 The use of leeches in traditional folk medicine (Hirudotherapy)

11 Mammalian animals used traditional folk medicine
12 Mammalian animals used traditional folk medicine
13 Therapeutic animals used in Anatolian folk medicine

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The course is taught in a lecture, class presentation and discussion format. All class members are expected to attend and both the lecture and take part in the discussion sessions. Besides the taught lecture, group presentations are to be prepared by the groups assigned for that week and presented to open a discussion session.
