Course Objective

To determine current and past disturbution of taxonomic categories of plant species, genus and family based on floristic regions.

4   To understand plant vegetation and distrubition.
5   To investigate biological diversity and plant genetic resources.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Puposes of Plant Geography course, scope and importance, course programme.
2 Elements of the geographical distribution of plants. Geographical distribution, geographical distribution areas of plants, mapping techniques of distribution areas.
3 Structures of Distribution Areas: Cosmopolitan areas, generational areas, endemic areas, vicarant areas, discontinuous areas.
4 Factors Limiting Distribution Areas: Paleogeographic (Continuous Shift Theory, Land Bridges Theory) factors, paleoclimatological factors. Determination of the origin (gene or origin) center of plant taxa.
5 Historical Factors: The evolution of flora throughout the history of the earth. Türkiye's flora in Tertiary and Quaternary period (Mesogens the elements, Arkton-alpine elements, Boreon-alpine elements).
6 Factors Affecting Distribution Areas: Physical factors: Geomorphology, climate, bedrock and soil properties, human pressure. Ecological units: Ecotype or ecological race, ecocline, ecospecies, eco-species.
7 Flora Regions: Flora region and flora element concepts. Holoarchic or Boreal Upper Region
8 Midterm
9 Floristic Regions of Türkiye: Siberian Region Europe (Euro-Siberian), Mediterranean Region (Mediterranian), Iran-Turan region (Irano-Turanian).
10 Terrestrial Plant Formations: Calcareous and forest formations (natural calcareous formations, secondary calcareous formations). Maki, garlic, frigana and so on formations.
11 Island biogeography: Biodiversity, speciation and extinction, true islands and habitat islands, islands that are seen as natural laboratories.
12 Macroecology: Investigation of large-scale species distribution and the factors affecting this spread
13 Species distribution modeling. Factors affecting the spread of species and modeling methods related to these factors.
