Course Objective

To get students comprehend development stages of Turkish community in transition from empire to nation state

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to explain general concepts that compose fundamentals of Turkish revolution
2   To be able to explain aims, methods and outcomes of westernization movements of the Ottoman Empire
3   To be able to comprehend developments that happened in domestic and foreign policies during the last period of the Ottoman Empire
4   To be able to understand impacts of the Great War to the Ottoman Empire
5   To be able to explicate politcal, economical, militarial and social events that happened during the National Struggle process

1 Concepts: State, Monarchy, Oligarchy, Republic, Secularism, Democracy, Revolution, Revolution, Nation-state
2 Western Modernization History: Feudalism, Crusades, Geographical Discoveries, Renaissance and Reform Movements, French Revolution, Industrial Revolution
3 Ottoman-Turkish Modernization (Until the Proclamation of the Constitution in 1876)
4 Ottoman-Turkish Modernization (Until the End of the Second Constitutional Period-1918)
5 Competition in the international arena from the 19th century to the 20th century and its reflections on the Ottoman State: Imperialism, colonialism, nationalism, and bloc formation
6 The Italo-Turkish and Balkan Wars
7 The Process Leading to World War I and the Ottoman Empire
8 Military Fronts in World War I
9 The Armistice of Mondros and the occupation process
10 Current Situation in Anatolia After World War I, Developments, and the Kuva-yı Milliye Movement
11 Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's Arrival in Samsun and the Organization Process of the National Struggle: Congresses
12 The Opening of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, and Legislative Activities
