Course Objective

It is aimed to give the students ability to understand how the architectural design affects the acoustical features of the rooms for different purposes (speech, music...etc.) in addition to explaining room acoustics criteria by examining theatre buildings.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   to define the terms Architectural Acoustics and Room Acoustics.
2   to recognise the development of theatre buildings during history.
3   to recognise the required criteria for optimum visual and acoustical comfort conditions.
4   to identify changes in acoustical conditions depending on the performance type.
5   to identify the effects of architectural design and material selection on the acoustical features of rooms.
6   to interpret contemporary examples in the meaning of how architectural design affects acoustical design.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Introduction to the course; Definition of aim, objectives and expectations. Information about the research topics for the research assignment
2 History of theatre and theatre architecture. - Greek, Roman, Mediaeval, Renaissance Theatre, 17, 18, 19 and 20th-century theatres and opera houses.
3 - Factors that affect the quality and design of the theatre Type and scale of the production, seating capacity, stage design, and auditorium design. Some articles will be given this week.
4 Design considerations for good visual conditions in the auditorium. - Limits and Properties of Human Vision, Factors that Affect the Sightline Design Information and reminders about the research topics of students
5 Introduction to Room Acoustics - Sound behaviour in enclosed spaces, acoustical defects, and the definition of objective and subjective acoustic parameters. Some articles will be given this week.
6 Introduction to Room Acoustics - Continue the definition of objective and subjective acoustical parameters. Some articles will be given this week.
7 Factors that affect the acoustical quality of Theatre (1) - Parameters related to the auditorium and stage design.
8 Factors that affect the acoustical quality of Theatre (2) - Acoustic Parameters: Measuring and Evaluating Acoustical Quality of Theatres.

11 Student presentations on research topics Students are expected to understand how the architectural design affects the acoustical features of the rooms for different purposes by examining selected examples.
