Course Objective

The aim of this course is to provide an overview of surveying required for architectural applications. This knowledge gives context to the fundamentals of surveying such as traversing, leveling, manual map drafting. The theory presented in lectures will be practiced in field application.

Week Subject Description 1 Introduction to surveying. Role of surveying in architectural applications 2 Surveying concepts: assumptions about the shape of earth, coordinate reference systems, basic principles of surveying. Field application: Utilization of prism 3 Accuracy of measurements and types of error. Surveying equipment and Instruments. Methods of distance and angle measurements. Field application: Distance measurements using steel measuring tape 4 Methods of measuring area Field application: Angle measurements 5 Traversing. Principals of traversing. Types of traverses; open traverses, closed traverses, link traverses 6 Open and link traverses Field application: Application of open traverse. 7 Closed traverses Field application: Application of closed traverse. 8 Manual map drafting, properties of contours, drawing contour plans, surveying methods for producing contours Field application: Utilization of tacheometer. 9 Levelling principals and methods 10 Open and link leveling Field application: Utilization of level. 11 Closed leveling 12 Field application: Utilization of total station. 13 Mid-term exam 14 Course overview
