Course Objective

The aim of this course is to provide the student with knowledge about constructability of reinforced concrete slabs, which are classified as planar members, in different architectural and structural design projects, and to introduce general principals and analysis methods related with design of reinforced concrete slabs.

1 Introduction to reinforced concrete slabs: Classification of slabs. General information about different types of slabs and investigation of construction. conditions.
2 Introduction to beam slabs: Structural analysis and reinforcement of one-way slabs.
3 Code provisions related with dimensions and reinforcement of one-way slabs. Numerical examples about one-way slabs, Schematic diagram of reinforcement.
4 Numerical examples about one-way slabs.
5 Introduction to two-way slabs: Structural analysis and reinforcement of two-way slabs.
6 Code provisions related with dimensions and reinforcement of two-way slabs. Numerical examples about two-way slabs, Schematic diagram of reinforcement.
7 Mid-term exam.
8 Numerical examples about two-way slabs.
9 Introduction to ribbed (joists) slabs: Advantages and disadvantages of ribbed slabs. Structural analysis and reinforcement of one-way ribbed slabs. Code provisions related with dimensions and reinforcement of one-way ribbed slabs.
10 Numerical examples about one-way ribbed slabs, Detailing of reinforcement.
11 Introduction to waffle slabs, Structural analysis of waffle slabs.
12 Code provisions related with dimensions and reinforcement of waffle slabs, Detailing of reinforcement.
13 Introduction to flat slabs, Advantages and disadvantages of flat slabs, Distribution of bending moments in flat slabs, Punching.
14 Code provisions related with dimensions and reinforcement of flat slabs, Flat plates, Floor openings.

The course will be taught in a lecture interactively and simple numerical examples will also be supplied abundantly during the lecture.
