Course Objective

Timber has been used as a member of structural system and/or building component during centuries. Today, it is also an important building material, especially by the effect of the importance of sustainable construction design. In this context, it is aimed to define the features of buildings that constructed with timber in context of structural system design, construction methods and detail solutions. Also, it is aimed to give the ability of understanding how timber materials affect the building design to the students and also encourage them to interpret on timber construction design.

1   Recognizing the physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of timber material.
2   Recognizing the industrial timber material and elements.
3   Examining glued laminated timber technology
4   Identifying the architectural usage objectives of timber material

2 Technical properties of timber Physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of timber material. Identification of timber material as building element.
3 Industrial timber Industrial timber material and elements in building production. Glued laminated timber technology. Decision of research subject Study for individual or group research assignment.
4 Structural systems with timber material Identification of Load bearing, skeleton, and panel structural systems. Study for individual or group research assignment.
5 Skeleton structural systems with timber material Traditional timber buildings in Türkiye. Study for individual or group research assignment.
6 Skeleton structural systems with timber material Balloon Frame, Pillar-beam skeleton systems. Study for individual or group research assignment.
7 Buildings with timber skeleton systems and panel systems. Platform system, Modified system, Modular system. Study for individual or group research assignment.

The course is taught in a lecture, research assignment, class presentation of a research subject and discussion format. All class members are expected to attend and both the lecture and seminar hours and take part in the discussion sessions.
