Course Objective

This course will focus on main principles of conservation historical area via examples of urban conservation planning in The World and Türkiye.

Collecting data and documentation on historical buildings and urban texture; Making planning policy and planning strategy on different scales will be taught.

Differentiations about presentation and planning language, making planning decisions regarding different legal formation of contextual examples aims to be queried.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   will be able to list historical spatial characteristics of cities (Knowledge),
2   will be able to identify and explain differences of historical spaces depending on time and place (Comprehension),
3   will be able to interpret documentation techniques about historical structure and texture characteristics of different countries and cities (Application),
4   will be able to compare conservation planning approaches and techniques in Türkiye and the other countries and to criticize the deficiencies of them (Analysis).
5   will be able to relate design and planning approaches and techniques for the conservation of historical areas (Analysis).

1 Architectural documentation of historicaI buildings. Access to historical information from the images.
2 Evaluating different conservation areas with their features. Göbeklitepe Archeological Area.
3 Architectural documentation of historical buildings in the context of urban texture. Documentation which establish a connection between the street and urban texture. Homework topics will be handed out in this week.
4 Analysis of the historical urban areas: Social, functional, spatial analysis of historical areas. Documentation which establish a connection between the street and urban context.
5 Analysis of the historical urban areas: Analysis of historical urban texture.
6 Preservation of Historical Environment in Planning Process - Master Plans
7 Preservation of Historical Environment in Planning Process - Development Plans
8 Preservation of Historical Environment in Urban Design Process
9 Midterm Examination

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

This course will be given face to face at The Faculty of Architecture.
Students will learn topics by attending and listening the lectures which supported by online visual presentations.
Homework will be given to students in 3nd week and they will be asked to submit their homework to be prepared about the 11th week.
