Course Objective

This course aims at considering the squatter house as the major component of the urbanisation practice of Türkiye on the basis of illegal development and in an integrated perspective with the by-law through questioning it within a theoretical context and evaluating it through the cases with respect to the created social and spatial impacts.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   will be able to define the concept of squatter house (knowledge),
2   will be able to discuss the concept of squatter house within the historical process (knowledge),
3   will be able to relate the concept of squatter house with the political processes and populist approaches (comprehension),
4   will be able to explain the squatter house with the components of migration and poverty (comprehension),
5   will be able to question the practice of squatter house within the up to date experiences (analysis),
6   will be able to evaluate the urbanisation practice of Türkiye and the planning system over the migration and squatter house practices (synthesis).

1 Discussing the definition of "squatter house" from different perspectives
2 The problem of slums on a world scale and its impact on living spaces
3 Considering squatter house within the context of illegal structuring of Türkiye experienced historically
4 Evaluation of the concepts of squatter house and illegal development within the context of by-law (from the establishment of nation state until the 1950 period)
5 Evaluation of the concepts of squatter house and illegal development within the context of by-law (between 1950 and 1960)
6 Concepts of migration, urbanisation in Türkiye and migration, examining the period between 1960 and 1980
7 Midterm Examination This week homework subjects will be given to the students.
8 The practice of migration and squatter house in Türkiye in the post-1980 period, spatial and social transformations
9 The changing relations of interdependence within the context of migration-based social cleavage processes, processes causing the instrumental construction of identity
10 Evaluation of spatial interventions in the areas of immigration and poverty and urban policies after 2000
11 Evaluation of Urban Transformation Law and Applications
12 Homework/presentations
13 Historical development process of shanty houses in Izmir, assessments based on migration and population

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The course will be taught through live lessons in a face-to-face school environment, and the students will learn by listening to the presentations. Students will be asked to read about the subject, follow the current news and share it in the classroom environment. During the semester, evaluations will be made with one exam and one homework
