Course Objective

This course aims to providing basic principles to city planners about development of traffic order in cities highway network at short term and midterm. Therefore methods and standard as a part of traffic engineering studies s are involved in this course content. In this subject, information is conveyed that planners will be able to need in preparing process of development plans.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Will be able to define the elements, components and standards which constitute traffic
2   Will be able to explain the relationship of human, vehicle and road with all the dimensions
3   Will be able to discuss the importance of traffic and traffic planning within the planning efforts
4   Will be able to question traffic order within the up to date applications and experiences
5   Will be able to use the basic traffic principles in the sound restructuring of urban environments and preparing development plans

1 Introduction: Definitions and concepts. Traffic and transportation problems in cities
2 Spatial-sectoral formations. Generel features, elements and functions of traffic planning studies
3 Urban road network and its features
4 Highway and urban macroform relationship
5 Highways road hierarchy and relationships between transport / traffic and land use
6 Order of informativity and other essential prestudy and research studies in designing and implementing highway
7 Route selection and design principles This week homework subjects will be given to the students.
8 Road cross sections, types and characteristics
9 Midterm Examination
10 Crossroads, types and design principles
11 Parkings, types and design principles. Submission of homework
12 Pedestrian, bike and bus preffered solutions, facilities and design principles
13 Traffic Calming Streets- Network facilities, signalization, markings, surface arrangements and greening
14 Traffic practice - Examples of some applications in World and Turkiye

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

This course will be given through lectures and the students will learn by attending and listening the lectures. Besides the midterm examination, students will be asked to prepare homeworks assignment.
