Course Objective

This course targets at teaching the economic, social, political and cultural dimension of urban life in different socio-cultural and historical settings and giving the ability to think in criticizing terms on social factors underlying urban formation, probable social impacts of physical planning decisions and urban living and its problems.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   will be able to list formation and development of cities and the different types of urban and urbanization from past to present.
2   will be able to list potential impacts of the disparities in social structure on urban spatial structure and the leading impact of different social organizations on the formation of cities.
3   will be able to distinguish differences examining urban developments in Türkiye and the western countries and the dynamics of urbanization in third world countries.
4   will be able to analyse the social dimensions of the rapid urbanization process in Türkiye.
5   will be able to relate urban poverty, the factors that caused the migration of population from rural to urban, spatial effects of migration with globalization process and socio-economic consequences of globalization.
6   will be able to interpret the importance of planning decisions and the socio-economic, cultural and political dimensions of the physical environment depending on the planning decisions and outcomes/reflections on different social groups.

1 Definition and method of sociology and urban sociology. General information about the scope and program of the course.
2 The definitions of the city, urbanization and to become urban citizen. The emergence and development of cities. The formation of civilizations, social organization and urban society. Historical conditions of the development of cities, the role of political and religious organizations
3 General characteristics of cities. Types of city. Historical development of cities (The emergence of the first cities, the birth of city-states, pre-industrial cities, urbanization with the Islamic culture from Central Asia to Anatolia, post-industrial cities)
4 History of cities, theoretical approaches in the urban sociology (The urban theories in the transition to capitalism, Chicago school, sector model, multiple nuclei model, urban theories according to the process of capital accumulation)
