Course Objective

This course intends to give the basic concepts including information on the city, urban population, urban facilities and activities, population and building densities and different plans/planning levels and cover an overall framework of the profession.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   At the end of this course, students will be able; to describe the city (knowledge) and list concepts related to city (knowledge)
2   To acknowledge problems in city planning and collect information on planning scales (knowledge)
3   To conceive of planning levels and identify their functions (conception)
4   To distinguish between various cities and city planning experiences (analysis)
5   To relate concepts of population and building densities (analysis) and be able to make related calculations (analysis).

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 WEEK 1 Content of the course, urban and urbanization concepts. Discussion on the issue of growth and selection of a hypothetical settlement.
2 WEEK 2 Debate on the definition of the city as an economic / geographical / social phenomenon.
3 WEEK 3 Definitions of the city. City categories at various scales.
4 WEEK 4 City planning process and stages. Actors of planning process.
5 WEEK 5 Planning in legislation, plan levels. Current map, cadastral and plan relations.
6 WEEK 6 Plans of various cities in the world samples. Homework (group) this week topics will be given. (Planning of various cities stories)
7 WEEK 7 Midterm Examination
8 WEEK 8 The concept of density in planning, population density, structure density. An on the subject quiz application will be made.
9 WEEK 9 Multidimensional, multi-layered structure of city planning. Documentary films.
10 WEEK 10 Professional organization in city planning. Interview with city planners on the professional field.
11 WEEK 11 Presentations of assignment (group). Visual and verbal expressions work presentation.
12 WEEK 12 Problems in the city (spatial) planning agenda.
13 WEEK 13 Town planning in the world and Türkiye
14 WEEK 14 City planning in vocational education process.
15 Final Examination

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

This course will be held mainly in lectures. Besides, the debate,
gamified conceptual expressions, with the participation of guest professionals
discussions will also be used.

Activities held for describing and identifying (conception and knowledge) information on the city and urban planning together with comparisons between various cases and the calculation of densities (analysis) will be measured by the mid-term and final exams.

Assessment Criteria

Activities held for describing and identifying (conception) related to the concepts of city and urban planning
information (knowledge) with midterm and final exam with classical and test exam method,
density calculations (analysis) will be done with a quiz, on various samples.
Comparisons will be measured through homework and presentations.

This course will be given with all kinds of conferences, talks, debates, documentary films and discussions developed as part of the course. It is expected to include different activities that will keep the student's interest in the lesson alive, to contribute individually to the group in the online environment as well as individual work.
