Course Objective

Scope of the course is to get students acquainted with materials failures, the techniques to investigate the cause of failures and the measures to be taken to prevent the reoccurrence of failures in light of the findings reached. By considering the moral and materialistic losses occurring as a results of materials failures, help the students to develop their skills to conduct an investigation on failed parts and systems, to make the right choice for the test methods of investigation and to gain ability to use these methods. Enable students to draw a relation between the results and causes of the failures.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To acquaint students with the techniques to be used for elucidating the extents of productive and design aspects of the failures.
2   Understand the test methods and interpret their results in order to identify the particulars arising from microstructure that results from loading and service conditions.
3   Recognize the types of failures and the basic mechanisms related to failures.
4   Enable to construct the experimental setup in order to inspect the materials behaviours failed to comply with the expectations.
5   Encourage students to show great discretion for the controversial issues between the sides involved in materials failures.
6   Instruct students on the use of destructive and non-destructive techniques in investigating a failure case.

3 Materials failure and its prevention-An introduction: Basic concepts.
4 Basic causes of failures and classification of failures.
5 Basic causes of failures and classification of failures.
6 Materials defects
7 Defects arising from production and design.
8 Defects arising from production and design.
9 Anomalies experienced in service life.
10 Defects associated with machining and metal working.
11 Problems arising due to heath treatment.
12 Failures caused by welding and finishing processes
13 Social and economical extends of materials failures related to materials defects

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

To present an oral presentation of a case study in class room as a team or singly and follow the lectures regularly. Asses the students gains acquired in classroom studies in either writing or orally discussing.
