Course Objective

The course aims to explain how an industrial product is obtained and at what stage of designing the material selection is taken into consideration. It also aims to teach how the suitable materials are selected for the components of the designed item, and materials standards and property data sources. A term time "team project work" related to mechanical design and material selection is aimed to provide a practice on project management as well as material selection.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To know the steps of design for a new product, and defining a concept for designing a product,
2   To know the necessity of materials suitable for a component of defined functions,
3   To know the description, the measurement and data sources of material properties,
4   To describe the different classes of materials, and know the properties and behaviour of different classes,
5   To be able to determine the material index and select suitable material using selection diagrams,
6   To explain the effect of shape and shaping process on material selection,
7   To know project management,
8   To be able to present a project orally and in the written form.

Course Contents

1 Introduction, materials and development of civilizations in history,
2 The steps of the design of a new product, the concept definition of the product to be designed,
3 The necessity to produce the parts of the unit using suitable material for the function of each part,
4 The steps in material selection accordingly with the objective and the function of the part,
5 The definition and measurement of properties of the materials to be used in designed product. The importance of properties such as Young s modulus, strength and toughness.
6 The classes and properties of today's materials, the concept of Material Index,
7 Defining the material index for different constructional components for different objectives,
8 Midterm exam
9 The selection of material which maximise the defined material index,
10 The effect of shaping process on the selection of material in the production of components,
11 The effect of micro and macro shape on the material index and selection,
12 Standards and property data sources for available materials,
13 Standards and property data sources for available materials,
14 Presentation of term projects.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Lecturing and project based learning. Students of 3 or 4 form term project teams and carry out a design project with material selection. The project work is presented orally and in the written form by the team on the due date.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

Midterm exams and final exams related to learning outcomes are given as usual closed book and closed notes written exams. Homework grade will also be included in the term time assessment.

Assessment Criteria

Midterm exam results and homework grades will make up term time grade, which will be added to the contribution of the final exam result to determine the course grade.

Course Policies and Rules

Students must attend the lecture periods (minimum attendance requirement is 70%). The use of MP3 player, cell phone and ear phones are not allowed during class and during exams. The programmable high memory calculators should not be used during exams.
Homework must be handed in on the due date. Any copying evidence in homework and exams will result in a grade of zero, and lead to disciplinary action.
