Course Objective

The course aims to give the technology and processes to prepare industrial alloys, and detailed knowledge of the solidification process in order to obtain alloy microstructures and resultant mechanical properties to obtain usable products.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To learn the equipment and their properties to be used for melting
2   To know the interactions between the molten alloy, slug and environment
3   know the factors affecting nucleation and growth during solidification
4   To understand and predict the solidified microstructure dependent on the solidification parameters
5   To be able to solve problems related to shrinkage and feeding
6   To design the solidification proces in order to obtain a cast product with desired microstructure and properties

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

Midterm exams and final exams related to learning outcomes are given as usual closed book and closed note written exams. Homework results will also be included in the term time assessment.

Assessment Criteria

Midterm exam results and homework grades will make up term time grade, which will be added to the contribution of the final exam result to determine the course grade.

Language of Instruction

Turkish

Course Policies and Rules

Students must attend the lecture periods (minimum attendance requirement is 70%). The use of MP3 player, cell phone and ear phones are not allowed during class and during exams. The programmable high memory calculators should not be used during exams.
Homework must be handed in on the due date. Any copying evidence in homework and exams will result in a grade of zero, and lead to disciplinary action.
