Course Objective

To gain knowledge on the basic principles of iron and steel production, production stages, problems to be encountered in enterprises, and iron and steel products in general, their properties, current processes and potential research and development.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to define the basic principles of pig iron production from iron ores, pig types and usage areas.
2   To be able to explain the basic principles of steel production from liquid pig and scrap
3   To relate nitrogen, hydrogen and oxygen removal applications in steels, residues and modification of residues
4   Explanation of ladle metallurgy, continuous casting and its products, units and operational problems and solution methods
5   To be able to evaluate the quality of steels based on the composition determined by the spectrometer
6   To be able to explain general information about sponge iron production.
7   To be able to evaluate the production, design and selection of iron and steel products in terms of their interaction with health, safety, environment, economy and social life, sustainability and waste management

2 The history of iron and steel production, iron and steel production and world trade, the development of the iron and steel industry in Türkiye, import and export data, its role in the industrialization of iron and steel production
3 World iron ore trade, enrichment of iron ores, pellet and sinter production, ore preparation in iron and steel plants, properties and production of metallurgical coke to be used in blast furnace
4 Blast furnaces and peak production, ladle processes
5 Steel production and oxygen removal in steels
6 Steel production and oxygen removal in steels
7 Definition of residues in steels, modification of residues
8 Ladle metallurgy methods
9 midterm exam
10 Steel production from scrap
11 Introduction of continuous casting method, continuous casting errors and elimination
12 Sponge iron production
13 Sponge iron production methods, advantages and limitations of sponge iron
14 Wastes in iron and steel plants, waste recycle and environmental problems
