Course Objective

The main objective of this course is to develop in the Engineering students the ability to analyze a given mechanics problem in a simple and logical manner and to apply its solution a few fundamental and well-understood principles.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To identify basic physical and mathematical principles replaced in statics
2   To classify the forces acting on engineering systems
3   To distinguish particle and rigid body
4   To solve equilibrium problems by using the free body diagrams
5   To compare internal and external force concepts
6   To explain stress and strain relationships
7   To calculate stresses in axial loading, bending and torsion

1 Definition of Mechanics, Basic Concepts, Newton's laws, Scalar and Vector Quantities, Two and Three-Dimensional Vector Systems
2 Two and Three-Dimensional Force Systems
3 Equilibrium of Particle
4 Moment, Couple and Resultants
5 Equilibrium of Rigid Bodies - Free-Body Diagrams
6 Engineering Structures, Plane Trusses and Simple Machines
7 Centroids of Areas, Area Moments of Inertia
8 Mid-Term Exam
9 Internal forces and stresses, normal stress
10 Shearing stress, factor of safety
11 Stress-strain relations, Hook's Law
12 Torsion of shafts and shearing stresses, angle of twist
13 Shear and bending-moment diagrams in the beams
14 Bending of beams and normal stresses
