Course Objective

The aim of Course is to analyse and principal design of gas and steam of turbines and compressors by thermodynamical principles.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Analyzing the subsonic and supersonic flows in nozzles and diffusors
2   Calculating of forces and torques by drawing velocity triangles at inlet and outlet
3   Calculating of mass flow and Power at the impellers of centrifugal compressors
4   Calculating of mass flow and power at the stages of gas and steam turbines
5   Determining the flow and power at axial fans

Course Contents

1 One-dimensional flow of compressible fluids and thermodynamical properties at stagnation
2 Derivation of sound velocity as a thermodynamical property.
3 Flow in convergent and convergent-divergent nozzles and diffusors and sizing of them
4 Velocity triangles and general equations of turbo machineries
5 Flow analysis and sizing of impellers at centrifugal compressor - I
6 Flow analysis and sizing of impellers at centrifugal compressor - II
7 Flow through axial fans
8 Flow analysis and pressure change by the stages of axial compressors
9 Action and reaction ratios and design of the stages of axial compressor
10 Flow analysis and blade design at gas turbines - I
11 Flow analysis and blade design at gas turbines - II
12 Flow analysis and blade design at steam turbines
13 General view of losses in a turbine.
14 Analysis of a sample design for steam turbine
