Course Objective

To give the awareness on the marble which is an important raw material for Türkiye and to teach its types, its importance in legislative acts, its exploitation and processing methods and machinery and their usage

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to understand what marble is as a raw material and its formation processes in nature
2   To be able to learn marble types and production regions in Türkiye
3   To be able to learn economic and geological parameters that affect the usability of rocks as natural building blocks (marble and natural stone)
4   To be able to learn material and durability properties of marbles and the effects of these properties on their use.
5   To be able to decide marble quarry production methods
6   To be able to decide the location and equipments for the marble factory
7   To be able to decide the location for the marble quarry

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Introduction and classification of natural stones. Scientific and economic definition of building stones and marbles. Legislative acts. interpretation of definitions and samples.
2 Classification of marbles according to their usage, hardness and origins, sample marbles.
3 Igneous marbles: granite-granodiorite-syenite series, peridotite-serpentinite-gabro-diabase series, characteristics. Samples from Türkiye and the world.
4 Metamorphic marbles: real marbles, gneisses, anatexis granites, migmatites, granulites, characteristics. Samples from Türkiye and the world.
5 Sedimentary marbles: Clastic rocks, characteristics. Samples from Türkiye and the world.
6 Chemical and organic marbles: Samples, limestones, travertines, onyx.
7 1. Midterm Exam
8 Technomechanical properties of marbles and theri importance. Their Physical, chemical, and mechanical properties. Effects of these properties to application
9 Marble quarry and factors effecting the operations. Geological, geographic and economic criteria. Marble block production, diamond wire cutting method and quarry equipments.
10 Drilling rigs, diamond wire cutting machines, other equipments and their operation. Jet belt and cranes
11 Marble factory, production lines, marble factory machinery and their classification
12 Operation principles of marble factory machinery
13 Marble factory remnants. Dust and fragment remnants. Recycling of the remnants to the economy.
14 2. Midterm Exam
