Course Objective

To set up background information about environmental problems and their causes, Geophysical applications in the environmental problems. Site selection and environmental monitoring of landfill areas, Geophysical method for detecting and also contamination monitoring of groundwater, urbanization and related environmental issues, detecting/monitoring of buried structures/objects and landslides, Geophysical studies on environmental impact assessments.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to understand environmental problems and related Geophysical applications
2   To be able to determine/define Geophysical methods on site selection and environmental monitoring of landfill (waste deposition) areas
3   To be able to determine/define Geophysical methods on detecting and protecting of groundwater
4   To be able to understand/define urbanization which is sensitive to environment and Geophysical methods on site selection during urbanization
5   To be able to determine/define Geophysical methods on detecting/monitoring of buried structures/bodies, leakages and landslides

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 1) Introduction to course: Environment, Ecology, Ecosystem.
2 2) What are environmental issues Contamination and waste concepts, and their diversities.
3 3) Geophysical methods in environmental issues. Defining a problem and designing a survey in Geophysics.
4 4) Electrical methods (+ Misse-ala-Masse Method, monitoring waste disposal area)
5 5) Modelling and inversion in Geophysics. What is deponi Site selection criteria for deponi. Case studies.
6 6) Basic hydrologic concepts: Hydrogeology, Hydrochemistry and Hydrogeophysics. Environmental issues related with groundwater.
7 7) Case studies including electrical methods applications (Deponi and groundwater). HW-1 Presentations
8 8) Electromagnetic methods.
9 9) Case studies including electromagnetic methods.
10 10) Seismic methods. Case studies.
11 11) Urbanization and related environmental issues. Microzonation. Case studies.
12 12) Gravity and magnetic methods. Case studies
13 13- Landslides. Case studies HW-2 Presentations
14 14- Environmental impact assessments and Geophysics.
