Course Objective

In the course content, roof covering types and general information about timber structures are provided, calculation methods and dimensioning timber members and their connections are outlined. In this scope, connection members used in timber structures, tension and compression members, bars exposed to eccentric compression, simple and continous beams and lattice systems are investigated. Timber roof types are also presented and calculation steps are outlined.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Examination of the timber structures history and present uses
2   Determining the advantages and disadvantages of timber compare to other structural materials
3   Classification of physical and mechanical properties of roof covering materials
4   Understanding the calculations and their steps in the design of timber structural members
5   Comprehension of roof covering materials accounting structure types and structural usage from economical perspective
6   Following new developments in the design of timber structures and its calculation techniques
