Course Objective

A sample highway section will be designed by the students in details as a term project. Every stages of the project will be discussed with each student.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to apply the knowledge gained by INŞ 3025 Transportation Engineering I
2   To be able to associate horizontal, vertical and other highway geometrical elements
3   To be able to design a highway segment for traffic safety point of view
4   To be able to compare different route alternatives for economic and safety points of view
5   To be able to draw the designed highway geometrical elements
6   To be able to estimate the socio-economic consequences of a highway project

1 Introduction, flexible and rigid pavements, bitumen and derivatives
2 The classification of bituminous materials, asphalt and tars
3 Sources of asphalt, crude oil, petroleum asphalts, asphalt production methods
4 Asphalt cement, its classification, the structure and chemistry of asphalt
5 The utilization of asphalt cement, related laboratory tests
6 Liquid asphalt, cut back asphalt, related standarts
7 Asphalt Emulsions, productions methods abd standarts
8 Detaled laboratory methods and area of utilization
9 The physical and chemical properties of asphalt
10 The Rheolohical Properties of asphalt in relation with conctructive models
11 MIneral aggregates, gradation types, application related with aggregates
12 Temperature susceptibility of asphalt, durability
13 General mix design methods, masrhall mix design, cold mix aggregates
14 General evaluations, power point presenation of students
