Course Objective

Fundamentals of foundation analysis and construction are covered in this course. Planning of site investigations, foundation cuts, subgrade modulus, selection of foundation type, and foundation analysis under earthquake loads are in the scope of this course. Special emphasis is given to field tests and analyses of foundations using field test data.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To know the soil investigation techniques and to plan the soil studies.
2   To classify the ground profile according to the earthquake code.
3   Recognizing the combinations of loads for basic design in the codes, knowing the permitted seating limits.
4   To know the basic types and to choose the most suitable type of foundation for the engineering problem.
5   To be able to calculate the bearing capacity and seating under the axial and horizontal load combinations of the foundations and to know the basic design principles of earthquake performance.
6   To recognize simple leaning systems and to calculate the horizontal loads from simple shoring systems.

Recomended or Required Reading

Textbook: Foundation Analysis and Design (Bowles, J.E., McGraw-Hill, Fifth Edition, 1997, ISBN 0-07-912247-7)
Supplementary Book: Other available textbooks on foundation engineering
Course Material: Lecture notes and presentations

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Soil investigations and conventional methods for spread foundation analysis will be taught by the help of sample problem solutions. Besides, decision criteria regarding selection of foundation type and plan dimensions will be covered using sample presentations. Copies of the presentations will be handed over to the registered students.
