Course Objective

Although, the international trade (foreign trade) is an old economic activity, it is increasingly becoming a more complex activity requiring specialization due to globalizing economic relations. The main rules of international trade, exportation-importation techniques and transactions, preparation of documents and risks, delivery-payment conditions and types, organizations of export-import, coordination of foreign trade departments of companies, preparations of foreign trade documents and evaluation, exchange and custom regulations, free zones, support of export and investment, unions of foreign trade, global organizations, and E-trade are the certain subjects that an engineer may encounter. A person who has an engineering education, working in a corporate or his/her own company, will exactly need this knowledge at any stage of his/her profession in terms of projects, production, exploration, theoretical and/or applied work. Even he/she does not foreign trade by himself/herself, it is important to follow up the future of the procedures at any stage of exporting or importing of the goods. Case studies and application examples from real life will be given along with the theoretical knowledge, thus encouraging doing foreign trade and/or following its procedures either in his/her field or others.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   He/she will be able to describe main foreign trade terminology
2   He/she will be able to make a basic road map on exchange and custom regulations
3   He/she will be able to define payment, transportation and delivery terms according to exporting-importing procedure specifications, to give an offer, and to understand the importance and the meaning of risk management
4   He/she will be able to prepare and read documents of foreign trade (e.g., proforma invoice, invoice, the list of goods, consignment, custom and other statements, the certification of movement, bank documents, fumigation, or other certificates, insurence, etc.)
5   He/she will learn the calculations of exemptions and refund of tax
6   He/she learn foreign trade companies, national and international corporations supporting foreign trade and maintaining of relationships
7   He/she will know the ways of opening to the international markets, marketing research and gain the talent of application, and learn rules of correspondance
8   He/she will gain a general idea on E-trade, useful links and trading correspondance.

1 Introduction to the international (foreign) trade, general concepts, what is foreign market How to make marketing survey according to the product What is the international marketing concept Description of the foreign trade according to the sectors.
2 The regulation of exportation and importation, regulation of custom and exchange, inward and outward processing regimes and applications, Custom Union and related applications, VAT refunds and exemptions. What are free zones
3 Operational Foreign Trade: The start and continuation of foreign trade relationships, having and giving offer / working chart, preparation of proforma invoice and invoice, transportation and delivery in foreign trade and the examination of documents
4 Operational Foreign Trade (continued): delivery terms, payment terms (Incoterms), bank procedures, the concept of transit trade and application in foreign trade. Product classification, custom procedures, statements, taxes and quotes
5 Documents of foreign trade, the concept of foreign trade document and its international and financial importance
6 The documents of transportation and delivery, the certification of movement, and other documents
7 Midterm Exam
8 Government support in foreign trade, government promotion and inquiry, applications of Eximbank and international supports
9 Financement of foreign trade and main costings
10 Cultural and trade differences between countries in foreign trade and its importance in foreign trade, risk management
11 Main discrapencies in foreign tradeand their solutions

13 What is E-trade, why and how to make E-trade, what are pros and cons of E-trade
14 Trade correspondance in English and Turkish
