Course Objective

The objective of the course is, at points where mining engineering and geophysical engineering intersects, is to ensure students to do knowledge communication based on project and to gain the ability to solve multidisciplinary problems, which are useful for both engineering branches.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to comprehend the importance and scope of geophysical methods in mine exploration
2   To be able to constrain the solution stages of a multidisciplinary problem regarding geosciences
3   To be eble to calculate the geophysical parameters that belong to a mineral deposit
4   To be able to determine the geometry and reserve of a mineral deposit
5   To be able to define the fundamentals of mine production methods
6   To be able to understand the importance of engineering economics

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Importance and use of geophysical methods in mineral exploration, parameters, projection studies
2 Brief description of geophysical methods
3 Explanation of the applied problem, details of the method and giving home assignment
4 Presentation of reserach by the students regarding the problem
5 Achievement of geophysical mehods at a mine deposit or working on digitized examples from the book of Mining Geophysics
6 Simple data processing application to formerly obtained anomalies (rounding off, trend)
7 Method of parameter estimation
8 Modeling of the anomalies
9 By using the extension and geometric dimension of the mineral deposit, drilling studies at certain intervals and finding the grade and geomechanical properties of the deposit.
10 By using the density value obtained from the geophysical method, the calculation of ore reserve in tonnage by means of reserve estimation methods (geostatistic al methods)
11 By using the depth of mineral deposit found by the geophysical method, the production planning of the deposit either in the form of open pit or underground mine depending upon the grade and economics.
12 Brief description of underground and open pit mining methods and comparison of these two methods in terms of technology, economy and production capacity
13 Oral and written presentation of the overall project by the students and in-class discussion
14 Oral and written presentation of the overall project by the students and in-class discussion
