Course Objective

Teaching issues concerning causes, effects and prevention of climate changes and adaptation to climate changes, raising awareness to the climate change

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Learning basic concepts related with the climate change
2   To have an idea about the political dimensions of climate change
3   To understand the causes and effects of climate change
4   To have a general knowledge about combating with and adapting to climate change
5   Achieving the awareness to the importance of implementing the necessary engineering practices to combat with and adapt to the effects of climate change.

Course Contents

1 Climate and climatic factors, Greenhouse effect and greenhouse gases
2 Political dimension of climate change (Climate change in the context of international environmental policies, legal dimension, international climate change negotiations and international relations)
3 Climate change forecast, climate models, estimations and scenarios, downscaling of global climate model results to regional scale
4 The effects of climate change (sea level rise, temperature increases, biodiversity)
5 The effects of climate change on sectors (agriculture, energy)
6 The effects of climate change on sectors (forestry, health, tourism)
7 Fighting with the effects of climate change (agricultural production and food safety, methods of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, policies)
8 Adaptation to climate change and sustainability (Water resources management, public health, environmental risks / natural disasters and management, carbon management)
9 Adaptation to climate change and sustainability (Urban development and transport, sustainable living, clean production)

Attendance/active participation to the lecture is assessed. Guidelines for preparing reports from homework assignments will be distributed at the start of lecture and homeworks will be collected in due format.
