Course Objective

To analyze the relations between the working class and the bourgeoisie by evaluating the labor relations and the development of the working class in a historical dimension, to understand the concepts and theories related to labor history, to make the historical development of labor relations in Türkiye and the development of organized struggle in the world and in Türkiye in the historical process understandable.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Discussion of concepts and theories related to labor history.
2   Analyzing the transformation of labor relations in the historical process.
3   An understanding of the historical development of processes of labor.
4   An understanding of the relations between the working class and the bourgeoisie from a historical perspective.
5   To have knowledge about changing conditions in labor processes and labor relations.
6   To make comparisons between current and past labor processes.
7   Historical analysis of the developments in Türkiye in the field of labor relations and labor.

1 Introduction of the course.
2 The importance of labor history in historical narrative.
3 Concepts and theories related to labor history.
4 Labor relations and the periodization of labor history.
5 Labour relations and labour before the capitalist system of production.
6 Industrial revolution and subsequent developments, workerization and labor movements until the 1900s.
7 Labor movements from the early 1900s to the end of World War II.
8 Midterm Exam
9 Developments in the 2000s after World War II, debates within the labor movement.
10 The new world of labor: the transformation in labor relations and the union movements.Events that shaped the structurel transformation of the labor movement.
11 Labor relations, labor movements and organization in the Ottoman period.
12 Labour relations, workers' movements and organisation in the early period of the Republic (1920-1946).
13 The course of labor relations and labor movement in Türkiye between 1946 and 1980.
14 Debates on the labor movement and organization in Türkiye from the 1980s to the present.
15 General evaluation.
