Course Objective

The aim of this course is to provide students detailed information about planning and development issues in tourism.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Have the necessary background knowledge in planning process and plan formulation to be able to comprehend national and regional tourism planning
2   Recognize theoretical approaches to tourism planning and development and the practical role of policies and policy formation in guiding tourism development to develop skills in tourism plan analysis, drafting and monitoring.
3   Explain the planning principles for different forms of tourism, different tourism resources, and different tourism facilities to be able to formulate a tourism plan.
4   Identify institutional elements of plan implementation to be able to discuss an action strategy for tourism development.

Examination will be based on understanding, synthesis and evaluation of the course topics.
Verbal participation will be graded.

Assignments include tourism planning and development issues. They may change for every semester. Grading:

The topic falls short of expectations and/or does not relate to the overall content of the assignment. (Poor, 0%)
The topic is dealt with briefly and with not enough information (Fair, 40%)
The topic includes adequate information and/or fits the overall content of the asignment at an acceptable standard (Good, 60%)
The topic covers all aspects and evolves in a logical flow (Very good, 80%)
The topic is presented with all available information and is discussed thoroughly and sucessfully (Excellent, 100%)

Case Analysis include the evaluation of a tourism destination based on tourism planning and development issues. They may change for every semester. Grading:

The topic falls short of expectations and/or does not relate to the overall content of the assignment. (Poor, 0%)
The topic is dealt with briefly and with not enough information (Fair, 40%)
The topic includes adequate information and/or fits the overall content of the aasignment at an acceptable standard (Good, 60%)
The topic covers all aspects and evolves in a logical flow (Very good, 80%)
The topic is presented with all available information and is discussed thoroughly and sucessfully (Excellent, 100%)

The project criteria include tourism destination analysis (20%), planning (30%), product development (30%), and management (20%) topics. Grading for every criterion:

The topic is dealt with briefly and with not enough information (Fair, 40%)
The topic includes adequate information and/or fits the overall content of the project at an acceptable standard (Good, 60%)

1. Attending at least 70 percent of lectures is mandatory.
