Course Objective

This course is designed to introduce students to the nature and structure of the tourism and travel industries with the aim to describe the unique characteristics of the industries, to identify the terminology used in tourism studies and to provide the necessary conceptual and theoretical background for further studies in the field.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Describe the tourism and travel industries to present an understanding of their organisational structure.
2   Identify major events and factors affected the evolution of the travel and tourism industries globally to predict future events expected to shape the industries.
3   List the components of the tourism and travel industries to be able to examine the current structure and functioning of the sub-sectors.
4   Distinguish the travel and tourism markets to present an understanding of the demand side characteristics of the industries.
5   Recognise current trends and challenges for tourism and travel to interpret real-life cases.
