Course Objective

Formerly known as the Third Pillar of the EU - Justice and Home Affairs - the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice (AFSJ) is an area of European integration with a unique set of principles, competences and application. It includes policies on border checks, asylum and immigration; judicial cooperation in civil matters; judicial cooperation in criminal matters and police cooperation. This course aims to introduce the main themes and challenges of AFSJ from legal and political perspectives. The course will scrutinize AFSJ actors, policy making processes and cooperation mechanisms through lectures and case studies.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Define the legal bases and policy priorities in AFSJ in context of its historical development (PO-9)
2   Explain main policies, policy making processes and cooperation mechanisms in AFSJ (PO-9)
3   Develop awareness of and ability to discuss issues related to the agenda on AFSJ (PO-11)
4   Develop skills necessary to prepare a term project evaluating an issue related to AFSJ in an academic manner. (PO-8)
5   Develop language and communication skills during participation and presentation of the term project (PO-2)
